Morzine Ski Resort

Still reigning supreme as capital of the huge ski area the Portes du Soleil, Morzine has been a winter sports destination since the Edwardian times. Brits and French alike have come to this gently rolling alpine valley to enjoy its ice skating and relax telemark / x country adventures.

The local name drop hero is Jean Vuarnet who is more recently known for his sunglass brand but originally shot to fame in 1960 at the winter Olympics in the USA. Returning home with gold for the downhill event he then set about an ambitious local backed plan of creating Avoriaz above Morzine and joining the Morzine valley to the other satellite ski villages in Switzerland and France that make up the Portes du Soleil.

Third biggest area in France with over 650km of piste to attack its one of the most popular ski destination in Europe.

Morzine is excellent for non skiiers as well. With an indoor pool facility and ice skating rink it provides activities for those not wishing to ski all day long.

Summer has a range of diversities with hiking, golf and a lot of mountain biking available.

Its relatively low altitude does expose Morzine in particularly to wet westerlies that make early and late skiing here quite a gamble.
